.BLOCKCHAIN: a DNS-based gTLD on the horizon?

Unstoppable Domains and Blockchain.com have announced a partnership to launch a DNS-enabled web3 domain under the .BLOCKCHAIN extension. They plan to register this domain with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), which oversees IP addresses and domain names. ICANN will begin accepting applications for new generic top-level domains (gTLDs) in 2025, with implementation expected by 2026. The partnership aims to prepare for this application, which, if approved, will integrate web2 and web3 capabilities, enhancing accessibility for blockchain-related businesses.

Founded in 2018, Unstoppable Domains leverages blockchain technology to give users control over their digital identities, providing specialized domain names. This collaboration with Blockchain.com seeks to bridge web2 and web3, similar to Ethereum Name Service’s .BOX web domains. Web3 domains, which act as NFTs on blockchains, offer simplified, memorable addresses for cryptocurrency transactions and website hosting.

The .blockchain domain, once approved, will serve as a dual-purpose domain for traditional and blockchain-based applications. This development is part of a broader trend toward web3 domain names, which simplify interactions with digital identities and provide immutable ownership of data. The partnership aims to create a user-friendly, low-cost digital identity solution to boost web3 adoption.

Brand owners and stakeholders should note that while the .BLOCKCHAIN gTLD is preparing for ICANN approval, blockchain domains under the .BLOCKCHAIN extension are already available and can be created through IP Twins.
