A new domain extension for communications
.PHONE offers a new naming option for businesses and brands seeking to connect their online identity with telephony, mobile technology or communications. Potential uses include a website for a telephone service, a mobile offering or a dedicated customer contact platform.
However, the extension will not be restricted to these sectors: no specific eligibility requirements will apply when general availability begins.
6 October to 4 January: priority access for trademark holders
During Sunrise, holders of trademarks recorded in the Trademark Clearinghouse (TMCH) will be able to apply for corresponding domain names before general availability, subject to the rules governing this phase.
The Sunrise period will run from 6 October 2026 to 4 January 2027 inclusive. Businesses wishing to participate should check their TMCH records and ensure that the information and documentation required for their applications remain valid.
The extension’s unrestricted eligibility does not remove this Sunrise requirement: priority access remains linked to a validated trademark record in the TMCH.
5 January 2027: general availability begins
From 5 January 2027, remaining available .PHONE domain names will be open for registration by everyone, with no specific eligibility requirements.
For trademark holders, the launch raises both commercial and brand protection considerations. A .PHONE domain could support a new service or campaign, while a defensive registration may help address potential misuse of a brand name in the new extension.
The decision to register should reflect the brand’s activities, exposure to abuse and existing domain portfolio strategy.
