The opening of .tr (Turkey) domain name registration continues to be postponed. First announced at the beginning of the year, then on May 14, 2024, the Turkish registry has announced that the current “grandfathering” phase will be extended until August 7, 2024.
Priority to third-level domain names
This period allows holders of domain names in .com.tr, .net.tr, .org.tr and any other third-level domain in Turkey, to apply for priority registration of the same domain name in .tr.
This phase has therefore been postponed until August 7, 2024 for the time being, without the definitive date of general availability having been communicated at this stage.
A booming market
The number of domain names registered in Turkish extensions has more than doubled since 2021, with over one million domain names now registered.
The opening of domain names directly under .tr is accompanied by the lifting of eligibility criteria, an important sign of the opening up of Turkish domain names. On the other hand, it also enables cybersquatters to register domain names they could not previously target.
