The Brand Safety Alliance (BSA), an offshoot of GoDaddy Registry, introduced GlobalBlock, a new domain name blocking service covering over 500 domain name extensions.
In detail, GlobalBlock already includes :
- 389 new TLDs
- 18 gTLDs and 3rd-level gTLDs
- 161 ccTLDs and 3rd-level ccTLDs
Until now, the blocking mechanisms originated from each registry separately. Identity.Digital (ex. Donuts) introduced DPML in 2013, but it only covered extensions managed by Donuts. GlobalBlock is the first cross-registry blocking service, and is therefore of undeniable interest to brands.
Classically, the GlobalBlock service is available in two versions:
- GlobalBlock: blocks identical matches in all covered extensions.
- GlobalBlock+: blocks identical matches, as well as variants (hyphens, typos) and homoglyphs, in the same extensions.
These services are accompanied by a protection never before offered:
Priority Autocatch. As the name suggests, if a domain name covered by the service is held by a third party before the block is enabled, it will enter the block as soon as it is released by its holder.
Similarly, any GlobalBlock holder may release domain names as and when it intends to use them actively. GlobalBlock is therefore a dynamic, proactive protection system, especially as other extensions should eventually be integrated into the service.
Eligibility
The following names are eligible for the service, the length of which must be greater than or equal to 3 characters:
- Registered trademarks. (This category also includes protected geographical indications and trademarks protected by treaty.)
- Unregistered trademarks.
- Company names or trade names.
- Celebrity names.
It is necessary to prove these rights. In the case of a registered trademark, a registration certificate is necessary.
Duration
GlobalBlock services can be subscribed for periods of 1, 2 or 3 years.
